The Bet edition by Vivienne Tuffnell Literature Fiction eBooks

Jenny likes a challenge and Antony is the biggest challenge of her life….
“Boys like you get preyed upon,” Antony’s father tells him in a rare moment of honesty and openness, but Richard can have no idea just how vulnerable his eighteen-year-old son truly is. From a family where nothing is quite as it seems and where secrecy is the norm, Antony seems fair game to the predatory Jenny. Her relentless pursuit of him originates in a mean-spirited bet made with her colleague Judy, Antony’s former history teacher, who has challenged Jenny to track him down and seduce him.
Jenny is totally unprepared for Antony’s refusal to sleep with her or to have any sort of relationship other than friendship. She’s never met anyone quite like him before and her obsession deepens the more he rejects her. She’s no idea what he’s already been through and as far as she’s concerned it’s irrelevant.
Pretty soon, for both of them it becomes a much more serious matter than a mere bet and the consequences are unimaginable for either of them.
The Bet edition by Vivienne Tuffnell Literature Fiction eBooks
The Bet opens with a mysterious man on a mysterious mission that makes no sense to the reader. Nothing about this novel makes sense at first, and this piques your curiosity. You have to read just one more chapter to try to figure out what's happening. And then before you know it, you're hooked and can't put it down.Vivienne Tuffnell's produced another winner with this compelling story about the daunting challenge of healing a deeply wounded psyche. As the history and personality of the mysterious young man are peeled away, layer by layer, we meet one of the saddest, loneliest, most likeable and unforgettable protagonists I've run across in contemporary literature. One minute you want to shake some sense into him and the next you just want to give him a warm hug. And his nemesis, an oh-so -innocent-looking beauty whose mask covers up a mercilessly sadistic monster, is right up there with the worst of them.
Once again, Tuffell's strong sense of place anchors the plot and furthers the characterization. Antony's home is almost as vast and musty as the museum in which he works. Both places are testament to a past whose antiquated values are of little help to this clueless young man. Likewise, the Yorkshire moors, home of the retired priest enlisted to help Antony make peace with himself and his past, are as wild and mysterious as his inner ghosts.
I loved this story of family secrets and wounded souls. I loved its twists and turns and unexpected nuggets of insight. Most of all I loved the author's psychological awareness, compassion and love of life that shine through every page. Thanks for the fascinating journey through the labyrinths of the human soul, Ms Tuffnell. I look forward to your next.

The Bet edition by Vivienne Tuffnell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The way a novel is structured is (in my opinion at least) one of the most crucial factors in determining how well it works. I've read some stories with good plots that have been ruined by poor structure. 'The Bet' shows how it should be done.
The story itself is intrinsically powerful, but if it were told in a straightforward, linear narrative much of that power would be dissipated. The reader would know too much, too soon. Instead, the author has chosen to switch between past and present in alternate chapters - 'Then' and 'Now'. That's not easy to manage. It means balancing the two threads so that they properly complement each other and merge together at just the right point for a satisfactory conclusion. But Vivienne Tuffnell has made it work perfectly. The result is a story that draws the reader into the main characters life, slowly revealing the full extent of his pain and the reasons for it, and maintaining the element of mystery all the way through until at last both he and the reader understand what really happened.
It may be just a shade short of perfect - there were a few areas where I thought the word flow could have been better, and one (minor) passage that didn't seem very plausible, but other than that I couldn't fault it. And although many stories have a twist at the end, how many manage a real jaw-dropper in the first chapter?
I understand that there are sequels to follow, and I'll be looking out for them!
I thoroughly enjoyed this - I was intrigued from the word go. The author explores the characters with great psychological insight. I was kept on tenter-hooks all the way through, wondering about the outcome. Her writing is excellent, sense of place very evocative. An excellent read. I will investigate further books of hers.
I finished this wonderful book here and cannot wait till your follow up on Anthony Ashurst...Bravo ma belle Viviene!!
A truly Captivating book...I could not put it down!! I especially liked how the author describes each character and how they become so vivid to us....it is as if while reading this book , I see it on screen.
Vivienne Tufnell is truly a gifted author who is able to deep inside all of her characters and make them so real...Hypnotizing her readers....
Now I am anxiously awaiting the sequel to this book as I want to know what type of a life Anthony as well as his cousin Stephen and old Greville had....Did Fr. Peter become a long time friend of Anthony Ashurst ? How did Janet and Pastor Phil continue on in Anthony's life. Did old aunt Sophie live to be a lonely old bitty?...Whatever happends in the next book I am sure I will be delighted to read it!!
